Identify powerful features of the architecture of the present time seeking to illuminate hidden knowledge and processes through a few key concepts. The image: apparently, it seems so essential to understand today’s architecture but which, on closer analysis, turns out instead to be an absence, an unsolved problem, an enigma hidden behind a culture secretly afflicted by iconoclasm. Post-production and montage: so relevant in the avant-garde and now fixed as an indispensable but often hidden creative component. The parody: the hidden but almost always present humour that corrodes the immediate message of architecture and makes it more unstable and, above all, more interesting. Ornament: a component censored by Modernism that today is once again the protagonist in new guises. The relationship with the classic: a secret affair that remains as a founding root of Western architecture.

Designed by Louis I. Kahn in Ahmedabad between 1962 and 1974, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is considered to be one of his mature works and one of the most monumental buildings he conceived. Initially involved only as a consultant, this project challenged him with new and unparalleled questions concerning the management of a "remote" construction site in a country where he was not familiar with tradition and methods such as India in the aftermath of its independence (1947). The reconstruction in detail of the multifaceted events of the design of the architectural complex, made it possible to highlight the significance that the IIM assumed within the broader cultural policy initiated by the Indian government and the different roles played by the protagonists involved. In particular, it retraced the working method developed by Kahn, underlining his obsessive attention to the construction details which define the overall shape of the buildings that were left with no cladding. The IIM's focus on the various phases has also become a matter of urgency in recent years, since only a few years after the completion of the construction site the walls have begun to show the first signs of degradation which remain unsolved still today. 269 illustrations

The history of civilisation and places conveys the importance of the role the culture of sport and a cultivated management of leisure play in the definition of the identity of peoples and communities. Elevating such realms to the status of cultural assets to be shared and enhanced by analysing the dynamics of transformation of the city and territory related to them is a sensible, necessary and ethical correct action. The context of European architecture shows an increasing number of plans that both transform existing facilities and create new ones with a defining and strategic role in the development of urban landscape fabrics. Activating basic and permanent theoretical discussion is a fundamental and strategic action for the credibility and professional values of a sector that powerfully conveys the need to update and retrain its technical, executive and managerial personnel through a renewed cultural approach. The goal of this book is promoting awareness about the design enhancement of sport infrastructures as collective assets capable of developing identity and citizenship, through the analysis of both physical immaterial factors and of the personnel charged with their conception, construction and management. Within contemporary architecture, the design of facilities for sport practises provides and extraordinary opportunity for the the adaptation and strategic reevaluation of the environment and its paradigmatic places. At the same time, sport infrastructures provide a crucial opportunity for architectural, design and technological experimentation - exploring their core features and enhance their potential is the main goal of this book.

Architects write a lot, especially now that conceptual aspects have become central in advanced reflections and narrative forms increasingly intersect the quest of design practices for an ultimate legitimation. In the growing mass of publications, these keywords turn the genre of annotated bibliography into a hypertextual device by highlighting recurrent issues and tracking synthetic paths of orientation among different critical positions, with particular attention to what happens in the neighbouring fields of the arts and sciences

Nowadays there are many studies, researches and publications about Joze Plecnik's work, as well as there are many authors who contributed to the knowledge and divulgation of the great Slovenian master work. The text in here, driven in this track, does not have the pretension to add brand new revelations about his work, but using the past litterature, it tries to underline the contemporaneity of his lesson, into urban transformations of the last thirty years' Ljubljana. The same transformations which allowed Ljubljana to be awarded with prestigious international prizes, such as the European Prize for Public Space (2012) and the one for the Green European Capital (2016). A result achieved by continuing the original urban vision traced by Plecnik in the city modifications plan and its many projects left as an inheritance. This heritage seemed to be precious for the intelligent work of the new administrators of the municipality whom, starting from the sensibility of authoritative experts such as Janez Kozelj, have returned to the Slovenian capital its original splendor. They are an integrative part of this story: the presentation of Jurij Kobe, the conversation with Janez Kozelj himself and the contribution of Miha Desman; as well as the photos of Ljubljana, taken by Luigi Ghirri in 1988 (kindly provided free of charge for this pubblication by the Heirs) and the final photographic reportage, on the city today, created by Sergio Camplone in 2018.
